Frequently Asked Questions

This calculator is perfect for individual investors who:

  • Regularly contribute to their portfolio but don’t have cash outflows.
  • Don’t have access to detailed interval periods of your portfolio values.
  • Need a simpler alternative to the more complex Time-Weighted Returns (TWR) method.

The returns were calculated using the Modified Dietz Method, a practical approach to measuring portfolio performance that accounts for the size and timing of your contributions.

The Modified Dietz Method adjusts your cash inflows based on when they were added to the portfolio. Contributions made earlier in the period have a greater impact on the return since they were invested longer, while later contributions have less impact. This helps us calculate a fair return without needing daily or interval period portfolio values.

You can use the annualised returns to compare against the benchmarks that your portfolio is designed to benchmark against, such as market indices (e.g., S&P 500) or your financial goals to assess how your investments are performing.
